Newton is a 2014 American biographical drama film, directed by David Gordon Green, about the life of Sir Isaac Newton. It was written by Alex Garland, based on the biography of Newton by James Gleick. The film stars Ben Kingsley in his Golden Globe-winning performance as Newton and Hani Furstenberg as his second wife Elizabeth Hooke. The film received mixed reviews from critics and has an approval rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 185 reviews with an average rating of 6/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Beautifully shot and well acted, but just too long for its own good. "Newton" is likely to leave viewers either satisfied or frustrated." On Metacritic the film has a score of 59 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". RogerEbert.com called it "a respectable and intelligent film", and compared its approach to its subject to that of the biographical film "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", which covers similar ground in a lighter fashion. He writes: ""Newton" presents us with an Isaac Newton who was still capable of being surprised by what he saw. It is a film that sees what he discovered as a gift, not an obligation. In its portrait, Newton's life is valuable for what he gave to others. That spirit of generosity is what moves this film." Peter Bradshaw of "The Guardian" praised the direction and performances but found the script "stiff and overwrought". The film was nominated for the Art Cinema Award at the 27th European Film Awards. It won the award for Best Film at the 9th Rome Film Festival. Ben Kingsley was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, and David Gyasi was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.
